Hyperbolic Senses

This project explores how unfamiliar scientific ideas can be interpreted through design, using AI as a tool to research and translate complex concepts.
Inspired by non-Euclidean geometry and hyperbolic space, it imagines a speculative conference about representing sensory data in space.
Through motion graphics and experimental visual systems, the work visualizes abstract scientific ideas and explores how invisible phenomena might be translated into visual form.

Process

Notebook LM

During the research phase, NotebookLM was used to organize academic papers and related sources from the field.
By building a mind map of the materials, I was able to understand the overall structure of the topic, and through iterative questioning with AI, the complex concepts were gradually distilled into explanations that could be easily understood by a general audience.

  1. Natural odors follow hierarchical, tree-like networks because they are produced through specific sets of biochemical reactions. To represent these complex associations without spatial distortion, a curved, non-Euclidean framework known as 3D hyperbolic geometry is required.

  2. The human olfactory system and natural odor statistics share this identical matching geometry, which allows our nervous system to recognize and classify vast amounts of complex odor information with maximum efficiency and minimal distortion

Concept: Use the "potato-chip" or "saddle-like" surface as the main theme, as it is described in the sources as a signature of hyperbolic space. This form provides the most intuitive everyday example of negative curvature, which is the core mathematical feature of the olfactory space.

Visual Element: A curved, 3D saddle-shaped object.

Significance: This object symbolizes that the olfactory map—which was previously thought of as a flat, Euclidean space—is actually a curved, 3D hyperbolic space. This specific geometry is biologically necessary to accommodate the complex, hierarchical tree-like networks found in the natural environment without causing spatial distortion

The images were progressively refined through experimentation, moving between Nano-Banana and various AI image generation tools.
